The Two Noras

Nora is a name I have loved for many years. There's a special meaning for that too. We have a family friend named Nora. Her children and my mom and aunt grew up together. I've known her for as long as I can remember. And she's known me longer than that.

Nora is the most beautiful Godly woman I know. She is the epitome of Proverbs 31. She is a keeper of her home. She is wonderfully hospitable. I watched how she adored her husband and cared for him. I watched as she refused to leave his side or even send him away as his mind and body were slowly taken from him by Alzheimer's. I have seen her hold her tongue when she disagreed with someone else's actions.

Nora has her whole family over for dinner every Sunday. She is completely loved by her family. And by me.

For all of these reasons, I have wanted to name one of my children after her. I have wanted to use the name Nora for over 5 years. When Lillian was born, Mike wasn't sold on the name so we chose another. Then we had Eli. When we miscarried in 2010, I thought I had lost my Nora.

By God's grace, I was wrong. And when Mike called out, "It's a Girl!" I knew I had my Nora.

Last week, the two Noras met. It was such a wonderful day for me. I pray my Nora grows up to be the Godly woman I see in the elder Nora.

By the way, Nora Ruth means "Gracious Friend." Seems fitting, doesn't it?

You described your name choice so beautifully and eloquently, I was moved to tears. Of course, the elder Nora is near and dear to me, too, as I have known her for as long as I can remember and she's known me longer than that. She and my mom were friends. We all attended the same church and the same schools. She is more precious to me than rubies. I am so grateful you chose to honor her by naming your sweet daughter after her.
