The day we moved into our house was the first time we experienced the awe of hot air balloons up close. As we moved boxes in from the truck, many bright and colorful balloons floated right over our new purchase. We were so excited to be in a location that is passed over during flight of such beautiful aircraft.
We were soon informed by our new neighbors that the balloons seldom come in our direction. Usually they fly away from our house NOT towards it. So, this was definitely a special treat. In the last seven years we've seen the balloons about three other times. And they launch six times during the festival each year. Seldom was right.
This year, "seldom" occurred again. I had gone out to look for balloons about thirty minutes after the scheduled launch time, but to no avail. I figured they went the other direction. But in another thirty minutes, Laila was up and barking at the sky. I've learned that this normally means balloons overhead! So, out I went to look again. And sure enough, there was a balloon, hardly moving, about 75 feet above my street. I ran and got the kids and we watched as six more balloons floated right over our house. I though one of them was gonna hit my tree! The people in the balloons were even saying hello to us as they passed by.
The next morning, my mom and Ainsley and I went to watch the launch and we saw 25 different balloons. When we returned to the house, I woke everyone up and out we went to chase the dragon. We saw the Plano Profile balloon land and "Miss Daisy" sitting on the ground. Watched the Jack in the Box fly over our heads. And we did manage to find the dragon but decided to find some other balloons instead. After all that fun, we stopped by the donut shop and headed home. We had a great time and greatly enjoyed the balloons this year!

Jamie and I seem to be the only "adult kids" in the family excited enough to strike out at dawn, before showers and make-up, to watch the balloons launch. Needless to say, any children already up are always ready to go with us. It's so much fun to see all the different shapes and colors up close and personal, and seeing how many we can count, as though it were a contest. We're the same "adult kids" who will stay out until midnight and later to watch and count the meteors during the annual meteor showers. I've got my calendar marked for mid-December, when the next shower occurs! Ready, Jamie?
