Our Nightly Visitor

Sunday evening we went to the aboretum with Nealy and Pappy to enjoy a picnic on the grass while listening to the Dallas Wind Symphony. It was a lot of fun, but really hot! Anyway, when we got home it was dark already and as we walked up to the front door we noticed, or Max walked into, a huge spider web. There were two large spiders on it. We were all amazed at the size and beauty of that web.

Well, the next night we went to a friend's house for the evening and again got back after dark. Max half jokingly said, "Better look for the web before walking to the house." And sure enough, the spider was back, web up and ready for dinner!

So, last night I watched the front door very closely as soon as the sun went down. And around 8 o'clock the spider was back and just starting to work on his web. Of course, as we started staring at him he did nothing. We sent the kids to bed, a little disappointed. I continued to watch the spider every once in a while. But at 11 he still hadn't done anything. I thought maybe he had died.

Right before I went to bed, I looked again and was very excited to find the spider busy at work building his web for the night. Mike and I stood there mesmerized. What amazing little creatures! And hard workers, too!

As I type this, he is back again. You should see these webs. They are awe inspiring.

Four nights in a row. Must be some good eats out there.

What do you think we should name him?

When Jamie was little, it was trendy to try to "capture" an entire web, in its full and beautiful form, onto a black cloth and frame it. I never saw one done successfully though. They are amazing, talented, tenacious, and apparently dependable little creatures! My name suggestion is "Gotcha!"

Too, too cool!!! I like Nealy's name suggestion. The picture you took is pretty darn good but I know it can't do the real thing justice. Thanks for sharing with us!

My goodness Jamie - I am SO afraid of spiders (and snakes). They do make some beautiful webs - but thinking about having one outside gives me chills... One night years ago, there were so many spiders webbing on our front porch that Darrell armed himself with an empty milk jug to get across (and I wasn't crossing at all). I will never forget it - creepy!

P.S. I do LOVE Charlotte's web...

At Ainsley's suggestion, this spider is now TOM GOTCHA and he's still spinning his web in the same spot, two weeks later. I counted 45 "rings" Sunday night, and Tom was still going strong. Mike is afraid of spiders, too, and he walked through it one morning last week. He said we should have seen him dance! (And he worried that it mussed his coif - ha!)
